Mazatos

Mazotos a small farming village in Cyprus

Today Mazotos is a village that still retains all of its charm,of a typical greek cypriot village, yet is attractive to the many tourists to this island looking for a quiet and relaxed holiday.
Cyprus is  well known for its history, scenery and hot summer climate, and is a popular destination for tourists - especially those from the UK and Europe. However many of these visitors see only the tourist attractions and are not really aware of the Cyprus that exists away from the Main Tourist areas of Protaras and Ayia Napa. Mazotos is the place you have been looking for, if you require the tranquil days around the Pool, or a walk along the main pathways out into the superb countryside.

Mazotos has its own small piece of history being, in Venetian times, a town of some importance that controlled its own district extending inland to Lefkara and beyond. The very old timers can still recall coming down to Mazotos from Lefkara - a 3 day journey by donkey - and helping load the Carob harvest for shipment to Limassol port. The community today numbers about 850, predominantly Greek speaking Cypriots but with a growing number of expatriates who own holiday homes or who are here on a more permanent basis as retirees.

Mazotos today is a quiet community of farmers and retires from Europe, in easy reach of Larnaca and the international airport,Limassol to the West and Nicosia to the North.Today the village is a small dormitory town for Larnaca but with a significant local market garden activity growing Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Melons etc. There are still 10 families who keep flocks of sheep and goats & produce local cheeses including a very good Halloumi. The setting is very attractive and the winter population more than doubles in the summer months with visitors from the big towns and abroad. It is interesting to reflect that there are probably more than twice as many Mazatonians living overseas as there are living in the village.
